Disgusted by proposed hike in Cllr allowances
It is with utter disgust that I hear our Tory councillors in the Royal Borough have proposed voting themselves a 91 per cent (yes, 91) increase in councillor allowances!

Funeral held for '£5 bet' victim
Hundreds of mourners have paid their respects at the funeral of a disabled man kicked and punched to death for a £5 bet. Brent Martin, 23, was chased across two housing estates in Sunderland by three people he thought were his friends. A 21-year-old man and two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, face sentencing for his murder last August.

Win for disability rights woman
A British woman has won the initial stages of a landmark legal case at the European Court of Justice which could give new rights to millions of carers. The Advocate-General agreed that Sharon Coleman suffered "discrimination by association".

No More PO Closures - Save Oriental Road Post Office
Lib Dem Councillor Norman Johns has condemned the proposed closure of Oriental Road Post Office. Cllr Johns said "I am appalled that this community Post Office serving people south of the Railway Station is to go."

Fight GOTT: The Campaign for a Fair Deal for Gurkhas Continues
This weekend, Cheriton in Folkestone becomes the centre of the ongoing fight to get a fair deal on pensions and citizenship rights for ex-Gurkha soldiers. An ITV news crew will be in Cheriton, near the Gurkha's UK Shornecliffe Barracks, to make a documentary which reveals the continuing unfair treatment of ex-Gurkha soldiers.
