Old batteries pollute - but no action by Council

Recent welcome changes in the waste sent to land fill by North Hertfordshire District Council means that the common household battery will make up a larger proportion of what is sent to land fill. The average household uses 21 batteries a year. The UK generates 20,000 - 30,000 tonnes of waste general purpose batteries every year, but less than 1,000 tonnes are recycled.

Political parties join forces to save Harpenden's oldest Post Office

Following the well attended public meeting on 23rd July, a "Campaign Committee" has been established with representatives from across Harpenden's political spectrum. Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Nigel Quinton and colleagues Jeff Phillips and Cllr Alison Steer have joined with local Conservative councillors Mike Wakely and Julie Bell and put aside party differences to work together to try to save Station Road North Post Office (as the Post Office call it) from closure.
