The only way to beat the Tories is for opposition parties to work together

Much has been written since Brexit about the need for a Progressive Alliance within British politics. This initiative has not materialised as opposition parties have failed to work together. Apart from Caroline Lucas of the Green Party, Labour moderates like Lisa Nandi, Chukka Umana and Dan Jarvis and Shirley Williams of the Liberal Democrats; no party leader has yet responded positively. The reasons are vested in tribalism, as no-one wants to take the lead, possibly lose their Party identity, or receive the ire of their members. They are thinking party not Country!

Lib Dems win in Eastleigh seat with 12% swing from Conservatives

Another week of council by-elections, another week when they weren't all on the Thursday. This time the aberrant timing was on a Wednesday, with a safe Conservative hold in Waverley and a reminder that the Liberal Democrats are not preordained to make progress in Southern contests against the Conservatives: Thursday's contests saw a successful defence with a very impressive vote increase for the Liberal Democrats on Eastleigh Council in council leader Keith House's ward:

Clegg joins two former home secretaries to call for halving of prison population

Nick Clegg has joined Ken Clarke, a former Conservative home secretary, and Jacqui Smith, a former Labour home secretary, in a letter to The Times calling for the prison population to be reduced to the levels seen under Margaret Thatcher, the effect of which would be to broadly halve the number of people incarcerated. Here is the letter: Sir, The recent violent unrest at HMP Birmingham is a wake-up call for this country. Our prisons have become unacceptably dangerous places, with a 31 per cent increase in assaults in the past year alone. Every three days a prisoner kills themselves.

74,630 households in temporary accommodation, an increase of 9%, and 124,090 children across Britain are homeless, an increase of more than 10%, in the past year.

John, Lord Shipley, also pointed out in House of Lords a rise in rough sleeping, described by a Tory peer as "a stain on our society" The Minister replied that the latest statistics show that between 1 July and 30 September 2016 local authorities accepted 14,930 households as being statutorily homeless. He said that the number of children living in temporary accommodation "is indeed a challenge"
