The end of a pernicious myth

An independent survey of social housing allocation explodes the myth that new immigrants jump the queue for social housing. The research, commissioned by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, found that less than 2 per cent of social housing tenants had arrived in the UK within the past five years, while the proportion of those born abroad living in social housing was almost identical to the proportion of social tenants born in the UK.

Welcome for government U turn on mandatory retirement age

Liz Lynne, LibDem MEP and long time campaigner against age discrimination, has welcomed reports of a Government U-turn on the mandatory retirement age. The Government has announced that a review of the practice of allowing employers to force workers over the age of 65 to retire is to be brought forward by a year. It has also been widely reported that most Ministers have already concluded that the mandatory retirement age should come to an end.
