George Smid says you can trust Liberal Democrats to reduce Fuel Duty

George is committed to reducing fuel duty while at the same time protecting the environment, creating a low-carbon economy and tackling climate change. Liberal Democrats have a very strong record in Government on helping people with the cost of fuel. We abolished the fuel duty escalator and have frozen fuel duty since March 2011, meaning pump prices are now 16p a litre lower than they would have been under the plans we inherited from Labour. This means that the average fill-up is costing about £10 less.

Nursing Counts

Nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants do fantastic work on the Island. I am particularly aware of this because my mother worked for the NHS as a nurse for over 30 years. She was an Operating Theatre Sister at Frank James Hospital, East Cowes from 1970 until it closed and at St Marys until she retired. And through the care twin boys received following their birth at St Mary's.

NHS paying the extra £8 billion

The report published by NHS England last year stated that by 2020, the NHS in England would require at extra £30 billion over and above the normal increases due to inflation. The driving fact in the costs is that we are living longer and the by 2020 all the generation born in the baby boom after the second world war will be between 70 and 75 years old. NHS England believe that there are more efficient ways of working and that of the £30 billion extra required they can make up £22 billion through efficiency savings. However even with that there will still be as estimated £8 billion shortfall. That is the £8 billion figure that all the parties are currently talking about. Liberal Democrats have said we will fund our the £8bn NHS commitment:
