we were greeted at the Tower Theatre on North Road with a welcome drink which gave the opportunity to meet the other people attending this event. As always, the Nepalese women were dressed in the most beautiful saris. Welcome speeches were made, including one from me, and the background to the plan for a Gurkha Memorial on the Leas was described.
A large international study has revealed several genetic variants which are linked to people with asthma. In all, more than 500,000 tests were performed on the genes of 10,000 children and adults with the condition, and 16,000 non-asthmatics. The Imperial College-led research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, could point to new targets for drugs. Experts said gene testing could not predict who would get the condition.
Serious concerns over safety of residents have led to the Liberal Democrats voting against the plan for this year's "Lighting Up Brentwood" event as the road will not be closed during the event. Tory plans to move the event to Thursday evening from a Saturday have also contributed to this decision.
September 23rd is Bi Visibility Day, also known as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day. Since 1999, bisexual people and groups around the world have held events to highlight bisexuality and combat biphobia.
As I wrote on here last week, the Council has now published a set of proposals for achieving the £10 million-plus of savings required to make next year's budget balance. With the consultation on these proposals set to be launched next week, I really do hope that people take the opportunity to have their say on what has been put forward. I wrote about the consultation, and the plans, in last week's Times and Citizen newspaper, and feel it's worth reproducing that here for anyone who missed it:
Thanks to the continuing hard work of St Peters' Liberal Democrats CCTV security cameras are to be reinstated in Glentworth Gardens. Local residents, shopkeepers and Liberal Democrat campaigners have demanded the return of the Domehawk camera as a way of helping to prevent drug dealing taking place outside the Glentworth Gardens shops.
