One year after her appointment as the first ever Liberal Democrat minister at the Department for International Development (DfID), Lynne Featherstone has already earned a reputation for picking up difficult subjects and setting ambitious goals. In her first year, she put the issue of female genital mutilation on the national and international agenda and famously declared that she wanted to see it gone within a generation and then started to take the practical steps to make that happen.

Council backs the Charter to Stop the Payday Loan Rip-Off
A motion proposed by Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Hinckley and Bosworth Cllr Michael Mullaney and seconded by Barwell Lib Dem Cllr Mathew Hulbert has got Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council to back the Charter to Stop the Payday Loan Rip-off. The Charter calls for tougher regulation of payday lenders and is supported by some of Britain's biggest debt, consumer and anti-poverty organisations - including Which?, Citizens Advice, StepChange Debt Charity, Church Action on Poverty, and the Centre for Responsible Credit.

Savage cuts loom to Essex Youth Services from the Conservatives
At County Hall today, Essex Conservatives rejected a challenge to their plans to slash youth service budgets. Liberal Democrat councillors are opposed to any further cuts in youth services. They asked the Conservatives to defer their cuts until the service had had time to adjust, but even this compromise was rejected.

Lib Dems welcome implementation timetable for same-sex marriages
LGBT+ Liberal Democrats have welcomed the confirmation that the first Same-Sex Marriages in England and Wales will be able to take place from 29 March 2014 onwards.
