Following the local election results in Wolverhampton it is clear that no one party has achieved a large enough share of the votes or seats to run the council as a single party.

Today Nick Clegg Leader of the Liberal Democrats said that the party with the greatest number of seats and the greatest number of votes was the one which had the mandate to try and form a government.
Liberal Democrats lost 2 seats to Labour in the local elections in May, but Labour failed to gain overall control and the Lib Dems won the most votes in Darwen.

"We had more votes than in 2005 in a wider field of candidates and in the midst of a tactical voting battle between Labour and the Conservatives. It is interesting that more voters backed parties other than the winner. A sure sign of the need for a fairer voting system.
