Growth Deal Heralds New Era For Oxfordshire Economy

The Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership today agreed an historic Growth Deal with the Government. The Deal will see at least £108.6million invested in Oxfordshire. £15.7million has been confirmed in the first year, and as part of the Government's on-going commitment to the Oxfordshire LEP it has provided an indicative award of a further £92.9million of funding from 2016/17 onwards. This deal will help to create over 6,000 jobs, allow over 4,000 homes to be built and generate over £30m in public and private investment.

letter to The Guardian on pointless detention

The article about meaningless prison sentences misses out another important aspect. In the UK we lock up people for an indefinite period for no reason other than administrative convenience in our immigration system. The UK is the European Union's biggest detainer of migrants, many of whom will have been detained in conditions equivalent to high-security prisons as if they are serving prison sentences. Most cannot return to their country of origin for reasons beyond their control. Independent evidence shows that £75 million a year could be saved if we end this practice which wastes people's lives as well as all of our money.
