Linking Peace issues with Seekers of Sanctuary

The National Friends Peace Board celebrated its 100 years anniversary last year at the Friends Meeting House in York. They had a walk, linking two issues, between Richmond Castle where the Friends had stood up for the treatment of Conscientious Objectors during the First World War, to more modern matters, the role of the US base at Menwith Hill in spreading militarism around the world. As they say on their website, "One thing we know from having delved into our history, and of course from our own lives and experiences, is that peace work isn't always easy. We can find ourselves swimming against the tide, struggling to find unity ourselves at times and, if we're not careful, worn out and weary. "

National Apprenticeship Week: Momentum Builds Towards 2016 in 2016

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, with a range of events going on around the Borough to promote the benefits to individuals of seeking apprenticeship opportunities, and to employers of providing those opportunities. In January Mayor Dave Hodgson announced the Apprenticeship Challenge: "2016 in 2016". This followed an apprenticeships summit Mayor Dave convened where the Council, training and education providers and employers sat down and agreed to set an ambitious target to reflect the ambition they all have for increasing high quality apprenticeship opportunities for young people and adults. So, while we have already seen huge growth in apprenticeships in Bedford Borough recently, the Apprenticeship Challenge sets the shared challenge of achieving the annual figure of creating 2016 new apprenticeships in 2016.

1 in 4 Local Children Denied The Secondary School of Their Choice

In the Secondary School Allocation reports released by HCC Admissions Team this week, over 630 children across the county failed to be offered a place in one of their preferred schools. The situation in South West Herts, covering Bushey, Three Rivers and Watford is particularly shocking with 222 children, or almost one child in every four, being placed in a school they did not want to attend. Through no fault of their own, these children will suffer the hardship of being separated from their school friends, and having to travel much further than they planned to a school that wasn't in their top 4 preferences Liberal Democrat Spokesperson Mark Watkin (Nascot Park) commented "We have been seeing the massive increase in demand for Primary School places over the last few years, and here is the start of the secondary bulge. The pressure for additional capacity in South West Herts is near breaking point. There are a lot of unhappy families who have received the worst possible news. The sooner additional capacity is
