I am one of the members of the Council's Economic Development & Environment Policy and Scrutiny Committee who are currently looking at all the options available to Essex residents for our future Renewable Energy needs. One of these options is nuclear power.
At a Full Council meeting of Essex County Council today there was unanimous support for a Liberal Democrat motion requesting that all county councillors should make the safeguarding of vulnerable children the highest priority.
Liberal Democrat County Councillors have voiced their strong opposition to cuts in services by the Conservative administration. The Conservative run Cabinet has this Autumn decided to terminate all Pegasus school bus services in July 2010, to reduce the ordinary public bus services and reduce the number of roads to be gritted in winter in advance of ice and snow.
For many years the Liberal Democrats have been arguing that there are better and safer modern green alternatives to mass burn incineration. The announcement by the Tories that they will abandon "energy from waste" (mass burn incineration) has finally recognised that the Lib Dem position has been correct all long. Apart from the environmental impact, mass burn incineration is known to discourage councils from recycling waste.
Former Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown and Prospective MP Terrye Teverson will be visiting Truro RBL to highlight the problems faced by serving and ex-service men and women later this week.
Commenting on today's Government figures showing the huge GCSE achievement gap between pupils from rich and poor backgrounds, David Laws said "It is shameful that the most disadvantaged children are only half as likely to get five good GCSEs than those who are better off."
