From January: all single-decker buses must be accessible to wheelchair users

On January 1st 2016, regulations will be coming into force that compel all single-decker buses in the UK to meet minimum accessibility regulations. The Public Service Vehicle Access Regulations (PSVAR) 2000 demand that all single decker buses have accessibility standards including a wheelchair bay; a wheelchair ramp or other boarding device, and priority seating. After January 1st, it will be a criminal offence under the Equalities Act 2010 for a bus not to comply with these access regulations.

Laura Davies is the new Lib Dem Director of People

Congratulations to long-standing Liberal Democrat member Laura Davies who starts in the new year in the new role as Director of People. This new post is part of the HQ restructure and her area includes the membership work for which departing Austin Rathe used to be responsible. "Director of People" is an amusingly illiberal title if taken literally… what it means in terms of the Liberal Democrat HQ restructure is a responsibility for areas such as membership, volunteering, training and diversity, rather than campaigning, policy or press. "Director of People" is the sort of job title which is common in some walks of life, such as the voluntary sector, though new to the Liberal Democrats.

Disabled man abandoned on the second floor of building during Atos fire alarm evacuation

A disabled man was trapped in a centre run by Atos, which assesses fitness for work, when the fire alarm went off and staff evacuated the building, leaving him behind in his wheelchair.
