Good News on Faster Broadband

The need for faster, more reliable broadband is a real problem for households and businesses in a number of our communities in Bedford Borough, particularly in many rural areas. That's why we have been working on a project to boost speeds and improve connections, and we've had some great news on this front with confirmation that we've been successful in our bid for Government funding. £440,000 from the Government body BDUK will now join match funding provided locally to help deliver the project. We submitted a bid jointly with Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes Council, and have been gathering support for the plan and building the evidence of the significant demand in the Borough for better broadband.

Council refuses to ban secret political meetings before planning decisions

Councillors are required to come to Planning Committee meetings with an open mind. At Tuesday's Wiltshire Council meeting Liberal Democrats proposed to ban the practice of Party Political groups getting together beforehand to discuss items on Planning Committee agendas. The pre-meeting practice was defended at the Council meeting by a number of North Wiltshire Tories, including the Chair, Cllr Tony Trotman and Cllr Toby Sturgis, a Council Cabinet member. The Tories used their majority to reject the proposal by 52 votes to 19.

It is the role of local authorities to protect the area it works for and offer support to its businesses, especially local businesses. However it is becoming clear that all over Wiltshire, the Conservative run councilhas decided to desert local traders and just concentrate on trying to maximise its own revenue.
