Wiltshire Core Strategy - new consultation underway

On 10th July, Wiltshire Council submitted its Core Strategy to the Secretary of State for examination. However the inspector threw it back and told the council to consult again, partly because of the last minute change to the document introducing a windmill ban.

Bedford Memory Walk 2012

As what passed for 'summer' this year clings on for a few final days of dry, warmish weather, I was delighted for all involved with the excellent Bedford Memory Walk at Bedford's Priory Country Park on Sunday that conditions were fair. This is not just because I was taking part (although it was most welcome!), but because it helped a great local charity event in aid of the Alzheimer's Society to be an even greater success than it otherwise might have been.

The UK's not so progressive income taxes

UK income based taxes are not as progressive as many think.

The chart below is the marginal tax rates for Income Tax and Employers and Employees National Insurance combined. This gives the full cost of taxes on labour, including the often forgotten Employers National insurance. When you take into account the perfectly legal ways that income taxes can be avoided with various tax reliefs like pensions etc the income based taxes are possibly flat or even regressive, rather than progressive.

Call for rethink on Ambulance Station closure backed by Council

At a meeting on Tuesday night Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council backed a motion by Liberal Democrat Councillors Michael Mullaney (Hinckley, Trinity) and David Inman (Burbage, Sketchley, Stretton) calling on the Ambulance Service to rethink plans to close the town's Ambulance Station.
