Bring all sides together to negotiate our future with Europe

It is vital to avoid the EU referendum result leaving an appalling legacy of division in the UK In 1981, the Labour party conference decided to leave the European Community despite the British people having voted to remain inside it six years earlier, in the 1975 referendum. At the time, I wrote a letter to the Guardian drawing attention to the desperate situation in which the centre-left found itself. Today, I raise a similar warning at a time when the country is in serious need of an effective opposition to maintain the best possible relationship with the EU.

Leicester City Residents voted to Remain on Thursday June 23rd

On a disappointing night for 1000s of Liberal Democrats up and down the country who campaigned for a "Remain" vote in the UK European Union Referendum; in the city of Leicester we can take some heart that the city residents bucked the trend of the country and our neighbouring councils in Leicestershire by voting in favour of remaining in the European Union by 70980 votes to 67992 votes to leave.
