Lib Dem councillors slam changes to children's centres
Brentwood County Councillors David Kendall and Barry Aspinell have slammed the proposed changes Tory controlled Essex County Council plan to make to the Childrens Centres operating in the Borough and across Essex. The changes in Brentwood are as follows: The Ark Children's Centre based at Becket Keys School in Sawyers Hall Lane will be closed and it will merge with the Larchwood Gardens Children's Centre in Pilgrims Hatch. The County may continue to provide services from the outreach sites to meet local need to minimise the effects of closing the childrens centre but this still has to be decided. Cherry Tree Children's Centre in Knights Way will see it's operating hours cut from 40 hours down to 15 hours and the telephone service which was 10 hours will be stopped completely. Sunshine Children's Centre which is based in Shenfield Library will see it's operating hours cut from 40 hours down to 5 hours and the telephone service which was 10 hours will be stopped completely. Councillors must be able to have their say under current system
I don't suppose many residents are getting excited about Barnet Council's proposals to bring back the committee system. Well, it seems so because only 71 residents bothered to respond to the Council's consultation. The last Labour Government, in its top down approach to local government, decreed that Local Authorities must choose between two new systems. That is either an elected Mayor and cabinet or a Council Leader and cabinet. Barnet voted for the latter.

Rural Bus Service Improvements Win National Recognition as Usage Climbs by 25%
As has been widely reported, rural bus services elsewhere across the country have faced drastic cuts in the face of the unprecedented reduction in funding for local authorities. While we are obviously contending with those same cuts in our funding, we have fought to protect rural bus services and have introduced new and improved routes, so it was pleasing to hear that those new services were singled out for praise at the recent National Transport Awards.
