A west Cumbrian councillor who has been fighting to save maternity services in Whitehaven has been chosen as the Liberal Democrats candidate for Copeland MP. Rebecca Hanson was last night selected to stand in the upcoming by-election, which was called following the shock resignation of current Copeland MP Jamie Reed.

The first principal council byelections of 2017 were on Thursday 12th January. Lib Dems gained both seats - one from the Tories and one from Labour.
Lib Dems won a council byelection in Alsager last night, for the East ward in the local town council.
A green initiative put in place by South Lakeland District Council has already started to save money and reduce emissions. Local MP Tim Farron has praised the scheme as "another example of the Lib Dem-run council's green credentials."
