Where does Brexit leave EU enlargement?

Whilst the UK population took the decision on 23 June to vote to leave the EU, there are still countries which are looking to join the bloc. The UK had been a champion of EU enlargement, looking to extend the single market and also to widen the EU's membership. In spite of the UK referendum decision, EU enlargement will continue for the time being, although 'enlargement fatigue' within the EU will need to contended with, where the rise of populist parties has made enlargement, and subsequent immigration from newer to older member states, a less popular policy for EU governments to pursue.

Dover bound drivers and Capel residents deserve better

The heightened French security checks and a lack of staff at Dover had huge knock-on effects for local residents over the weekend, as roads around Dover and Folkestone became gridlocked.Queuing to reach Dover check-in on the A20 took up to 16 hours at the worst times through Saturday and into Sunday. Alhough road routes are now clear running into Dover, Police are warning of repeat issues at busy times over the summer.

The Northern Powerhouse must Not become the Northern Poorhouse

As Liberal Democrats we a strong believers in devolution. The genuine relocation of decision making, together with the resources required to implement those decisions, to the geographic area where the benefits will be experienced is good for democracy, the economy and social cohesion. So we gave a cautious welcome to the creation in 2017 of a Tees Valley "city region" with an elected mayor.

Bog Centre Celebrates 20 Years

The old Bog School Celebrated 20 years as a visitors centre last week with a commemorative event which drew over 60 people from right across the community. Heather Kidd said:"The Bog Centre is a big draw for walkers, cyclists and ordinary visitors to this area and has highly praised on trip advisor. Local people drop in for a cup of tea too. The volunteers who run the Centre have done a terrific job over the years putting us on the tourist map." The Centre building will shortly be transferred to to to the Bog Centre Volunteers who are now set up as Community Interest Company (CIC). They will then have the ability to run the Centre for the next 25 years! The lease should be transferred on Wednesday (27th July).
