The final week: Etruria railway station is a joke

I'm departing Derby and calling at Peartree, Tutbury and Hatton, Uttoxeter, Blythe Bridge, Longton, Stoke on Trent Longport, Kidsgrove, Alsager, Crewe… no more will I call at Etruria Station on the slow train… (to recall Flanders and Swann). Ah the nostalgia of going back to a place you know and love is that everything has changed and nothing is different. But as I sit on my train to Stoke-on-Trent (the train signal board cited above doesn't have hyphens!) I reflect that Etruria railway station has closed since I was there.

Fury as Council refuse to accept pay rise petition

Rochdale Liberal Democrats have spoken of their fury after Rochdale Council refused to accept their petition against the controversial councillor's pay rise. 1,615 people have so far signed the petition so far but the Council have chosen to accept a petition on their website signed by just 41 residents.

AS IF THE NHS DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TO COPE WITH.........

NHS trusts are facing a new challenge in their cash strapped struggle to provide a high standard service. Now hospitals are faced with a sharp rise of 21% (£ 322 millions) in business rates on their property. As an example, the Queen Elizabeth, Birmingham will face a tax bill rise from £2.8m per year to£6.9m unless MPs and ourselves can persuade the Government to relent. One solution would be to allow NHS properties to claim charity status reductions of 80% as some private hospitals eg the Nuffield Trust already do but so far that sensible suggestion has been rejected by Jeremy Hunt.

Henham and Elsenham By-Election

Thursday 16th was not a good night for the Lib Dems in losing the two seats for Elsenham and Henham they had held for over 20 years. Their valiant and very able candidates Lori Flawn and Sinead Holland would have served the two villages well had they been chosen by the voters. The Lib Dems' successful vote in 2015 slipped to 22%. It was an even worse night for the Conservatives. Their vote dropped to 10%; probably the worst ever Conservative local election result in Uttlesford.
