Lib Dems' Conference rejects NHS Bill

The health debate The big event of conference was this morning's debate on the Health and Social Care Bill. By a close margin (314-270), conference voted against a call for the party's peers to support the Bill at its Third Reading. The clear will of conference was that it does not like the Bill.

Essex County Council snub for south Chelmsford crossing campaigners

Campaigners in the Tile Kiln area of south Chelmsford say they have been snubbed by Essex County Council Highways. Essex CC told residents that a zebra crossing would go in to Linnet Drive, to help children going to and from school. Following a small number of objections, the scheme was put on hold, despite hundreds of messages in support.

Launch of New Canoe Pass and Slalom Facility - Boost for Sporting Activity on the River

We are all rightly proud of the beautiful River Great Ouse in Bedford, but there is one way in particular in which we can make even more of it for the benefit of local residents and visitors. I'm referring to increasing opportunities for more people to actually get on the river themselves and enjoy it for sports and leisure activities. Last year, the Council joined up with the Environment Agency to publish a 'Waterspace Strategy' for Bedford, which focused on how we could really make the most of our fantastic river for the community as a whole. In addition to seeking to introduce more opportunities for leisure boating such as punting or rowing boats, it also looked at improving sporting access to the river, and with that in mind I was delighted to attend the opening of the new Duckmill Weir Canoe Pass and Slalom facility last weekend.
