Government Tax Credit system wasted over £9Billion

The Liberal Democrats have revealed that Gordon Brown's flagship tax credit system is on course to have wasted over £9bn in the first 3 years. The figures have been published ahead of this week's release by HMRC of new figures on fraud and error in the tax credits system for 2004/05.

New Shepway Council Tax Exemption

A new class of council tax exemption has been introduced by Shepway Council. It adds to the exemption already in place that waives council tax on a property left empty because someone has had to leave it to care for a person who is old, disabled or ill. The new exemption will cover a home left empty when someone has to move out to provide care for children.

Government accused over passport checks failure

The UK government has defended itself against claims by Interpol's head that it is failing to check visitors against a database of stolen passports. Ronald K Noble, the police agency's chief, said there was a "clear link between stolen passports and al-Qaeda linked terrorist activity". Mr Noble told the BBC: "The UK's anti-terrorist effort is in the wrong century."
