St Mary's Street Update - Now Open in Both Directions
I'm pleased to confirm that St Mary's Street is now open in both directions, as work continues on the major scheme to reconstruct the road after a survey revealed it was at risk of collapsing. The works will continue for up to another three weeks at most, during which it will continue to be at a reduced capacity (i.e. one lane open in each direction). However, it's great to be able to report that vehicles can now travel north over the Town Bridge, which will ease some of the pressure on our road network and help residents in going about their day-to-day business.

Just 37% of Cumbrian's have access to all 3G mobile network providers
A new series of OFCOM maps published last week show that less that 40% of Cumbrians have access to the full range of 3G mobile network providers, putting it on the lowest end of the OFCOM coverage scale.

Wiltshire Council to spend £820,000 combating nitrate pollution
WC is to allocate the money, including £225,000 in the current financial year, to clean up farms on the county estate to attempt to make them compliant with the European Commission Nitrates Directive. The purpose of the directive is to prevent contamination of ground water. Farms in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) have to build secure slurry stores to prevent leakage, and are restricted as to when they can spread slurry. The Directive comes into force on January 1st 2012. Since the Environment Agency estimates it can take up to 18 months for an affected farm to achieve compliance WC could be accused of leaving things a bit late, and WC director Carlton Brand accepts that the council will be at risk of prosecution.
