The victory by Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential elections should not come as a surprise. The perception post-2008 financial crisis amongst many voters, especially working-class voters, is one of "I am doing badly and somebody who does not look like me is doing well". In some cases this is true, despite the fact that western economies are growing. It also shows a failure, like Brexit, of liberal and social parties to address their historic core voters' concerns. The US election result is yet another vote against globalisation and the prevailing socio-economic and political order by a segment of society that has felt alienated and left-behind by mainstream parties for too long.

I am one of those people who have often wondered why British governments pay relatively little attention to India. After all, it's a big country, with an emerging middle class who want to travel, buy luxury goods and send their children to good universities overseas. Why wouldn't we want to build stronger links with a Commonwealth country that is likely to be one of the world's largest economies before too long? And yet, the attention of our politicians and diplomats often seems biased towards China. Frankly though, after Theresa May's trip to New Delhi and Bengaluru, I almost wish that she hadn't bothered. Yes, I acknowledge that she has a number of problems in attempting to build a stronger relationship with India - the fact that she is trying to implement a Brexit decision on the basis that migration was a key factor, whilst some Leave campaigners were claiming that Brexit would mean easier access for Indians (and others) wanting to visit family here, is a contradiction almost impossible to square. A few days ago Trump was describing the prospect of being "like Brexit but more". That catches my sense of shock today - though I wouldn't want to take the parallel as far as he does. I've just been exchanging emails and Facebook messages with shocked friends in the US. Perhaps the system will right itself. Perhaps he won't be as bad as I fear. Perhaps he will be as bad as I fear, and be forced from office (he faces a civil case arising from alleged child rape on 16 December).
