October 10th is World Mental Health Day, a day for raising awareness and improving education about mental health. In Government, the Liberal Democrats put mental health on equal priority with physical health, and at the election we pledged a further £8bn for the NHS to help deliver this. Norman Lamb MP has written about the subject today, and this week the Welsh Liberal Democrats passed a motion in the Assembly calling for better mental health support in Wales, which you can support through this petition.
From today onwards, when you hear "EU", you should think "science and innovation". The EU has more scientific output than the US, it's better networked, and its output is growing faster. In the UK, we are huge beneficiaries of being in the EU. Although our own successive governments have dithered on backing science, the EU has increased science investment sharply, focusing on university-business interactions, multinational networks and cross-border challenges. This perfectly complements our national funding, helping the UK to hold pole position globally in science productivity.

Yesterday I wrote about the English Party strategy paper which sets out a mix of welcome and very risky plans for changing the way the Liberal Democrats are run. Two further points are worth adding as they address some of the questions which have come up since.
