View from the Commons-More of the same?

We now have a new Prime Minister - although no one not even Labour Party members had any say in the matter. What though if anything will change? Gordon has trailed some changes in the way Government works -but will any policies change or will it just be more of the same? On policy Gordon says he wants to tackle the NHS, Crime and Housing, but where has he been for the last 10 years? The answer is that he has been at the centre of Government as Blair's number two and controller of the purse strings.

Brentwood's community halls - the future

Councillors were asked to make a decision on the future of our community halls, even though detailed cost, usage and maintenance figures were not provided to them and one of the largest halls in the borough, Keys Hall in Warley, is still under threat of closure by the Conservative administration.

Tories abandon Green Taxes

Tory shadow chancellor George Osborne has rowed back from environmental policies that have enraged the right as the Tories geared up for their annual conference. The shadow chancellor said that proposals to tax supermarket car parks and to give air passengers a "green miles" allowance, under which they would be taxed if they took more than one short-haul flight a year, would now be abandoned. The green plans were drawn up by a policy commission under John Gummer and Zac Goldsmith, but have proved controversial among more traditional Tories. The Conservatives have been accused of retreating into a right-wing comfort zone.
